Natural Remedies To Cure Dandruff

Dandruff generally occurs due to scalp dryness. It is basically white flakes seen on the head and shoulders due to shedding of the topmost layer of skin of the scalp. Causes for dandruff vary from infections (fungal), faulty food habits and imbalances in hormones. Stress and too much use of chemical-based hair products can contribute to it. However, natural remedies have been found effective in preventing it.

Essential oil of melaleuca alternifolia i.e. tea tree; works as a potent agent to treat fungal infections. It is also an antiseptic. You can find shampoos containing this oil at most natural health outlets and even drug shops.

Make your own anti-dandruff shampoo by mixing 10 drops of tea tree oil and blending it with 8 grams of liquid castile soap (unscented). Shampoo hair like normal and rinse it thoroughly. When applied thrice a week, the result is that the scalp skin is deeply conditioned and blood circulation improves. Thus, dandruff decreases.

Lemon and Rosemary too can be used after using your dandruff shampoo. This prevents the scalp from drying. Once you towel dry your hair, take a coin shaped amount and gently massage it into the scalp. To improve circulation, brush your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Hair should be dry, otherwise there may be hair breakage.

Vinegar of apple can reduce itching. It is acidic and so relieves scalp dryness which causes the itching. Application of lime has similar results. Add a few drop of tea tree oil with equal amounts of the vinegar of apple cider. Add distilled water and rub it over the scalp.

Hot oils like castor, olive or flaxseed are soothing. Warm the oil and apply in onto the scalp. Once done, cover your head with a steamed towel or plastic shower cap or bag for at least an hour. The heat penetrates the scalp, opening up the pores to absorb oil. After an hour, rinse it off using a shampoo having an avocado base. Castile will do too.

A combination of four tablespoons of steeped dry nettle leaves in a pint of boiling water can alleviate dandruff. Boil for 30 minutes and strain. Add 60ml of vinegar of apple cider to it. Massage this into the scalp and leave overnight. If you are worried about staining your pillow, keep a towel on its surface. Be careful that you don’t oil your face in the process as it may cause pimples!
