Drink Coffee To Reduce The Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes
According to a report published in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry, there is a new solution to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and it is found in drinking coffee. Ling Zheng, Kun Huang and colleagues explained in their study that coffee drinkers can reduce their risk in developing type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes accounts to 90-95 % of the total diabetic cases worldwide.
The study showed that people who drink four or more cups of coffee daily have a 50% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes; every additional cup can lower the risk to almost 7%.
The research has found that the misfolding of a substance called human islet amyloid polypeptide or hlAPP in causing type 2 diabetes. The researchers are looking into the beneficial properties of coffee to block hlAPP which may be the mystery behind its ability to reduce this type of diabetes. Two categories of compounds were actually identified which are found in coffee that inhibited hlAPP. This definitely suggests the ability of coffee to lower a person’s risk.
According to researchers, this beneficial effect is expected in a regular coffee drinker and while coffee intake is being avoided due to its caffeine content, individuals must also reconsider due to its other therapeutic effects. Coffee is a staple drink for some people in the morning while others enjoy a cup or more during the day. Some may even prefer to drink coffee after meals or as they work during different hours in a day without considering that there is much more to coffee aside from their favorite beverage.
The study was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Basic Research Program of China and the Chinese Ministry of Education.
