Prostate Cancer In Men Over 80 – Appropriate Treatment

Prostate cancer is a condition that develops with a large number of individuals nowadays, many of the causes being the unhealthy lifestyle that is reflected by unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercises and omitting regular check up by the doctor. Some doctors agree with the opinion that this condition when developed with men over 80 is not that seriously aggravating as it is with men aged under 40 years.

This can stand as true knowing that this condition evolves very slowly and if you had been interested in this disease you would have read that this one presents several stages of severity that appear with the disease gradual development.

One would say that once this condition develops with an individual over 80 of age, then the right approach into treating prostate cancer would be the aggressive way. But you should know that this type of aggressiveness can have side effects with this group of seniors. Not the same can be said with individuals who are under 40 of age, as they can stand and tolerate better this type of treatment approach if it is recommended as appropriate.

It is wrong to go by the belief that with a person aged over 80 there isn’t too much time to live anyway, however doctors’ duty is to find ways to manage with the disease in an adequate manner. Unfortunately there still is a large number of doctors who think that there is no point in bothering with a treatment for the elderly who develop this condition.

When we talk about cancer, there are various factors that need to be considered before applying the appropriate treatment, regardless of the patient’s age. One of these factors is based on the patient’s desires related to the level which this disease has reached at. Another factor according to which the right treatment is approached, is heredity. When prostate cancer appears at early ages it means that it runs from the family and in this case a regular monitoring of the condition paired with aggressive treatment might be the solution.

As to those patients aged 80 being detected with this form of cancer, the frailty of their general state should be mainly considered when prescribing an appropriate treatment. However, when an individual has reached this age without any other severe conditions, it means that they have successfully survived and overcome many physical and medical challenges throughout time.

Once the prostate cancer is installed, there is a slow advancing of the condition which in the seniors’ cases they should be subject for ‘watchful waiting’. This will include the most appropriate way of treating the disease: by minimizing the risk of this type of cancer to reach the metastases level.

Along with this treatment they will benefit from continuing to lead a qualitative level of life protecting themselves against the malignant cancer condition to run through their bodies.
