Possible Link Of The Body’s Biological Clock With Activation Of Skin Stem Cells

A recent study reveals the role of the body’s daily biological clock in the regenerative capacity of skin stem cells. There are significant results in the effect of the disruption of the body’s circadian rhythm to premature skin tissue aging and the risk of developing skin tumors.

A study conducted at the Epithelial Homeostasis and Cancer group at the Center for Genomic Regulation which was published in the journal Nature, revealed that reestablishment of the body’s biological clock can increase the regenerative capacity of the skin and decreases the risk of developing skin cancer and tumors.

The body’s circadian rhythm controls our behavior from sun up to sun down and can also be responsible for the daily regeneration of the skin stem cells. Skin cells deteriorate and remove rapidly in a day and skin stem cells replace these dead cells. With normal functioning of the skin cells, healthy skin is maintained, harmful organisms are blocked and our body organs and tissues are protected with an impermeable skin barrier.

The study further revealed that skin stem cell behavior was greatly regulated by our internal biological clock. During peak hours of light exposure, stem cells are able to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and in the evening, cells divide and regenerate to replace damaged cells. Clearly, the body’s biological clock determines cell activity and when the rhythm is disrupted, there is a potential risk of developing skin cancer through DNA damage.

The body’s biological clock may also tend to fail as we age as well as the recurrence of unhealthy sleeping habits due to the changes in our daily routine. More studies will also be done in the future regarding the why our circadian rhythm fails as our body system ages.

So the disruption in the function of body’s biological clock may lead you to early aging as well as skin cancer!

Lonnie, Yes, you got it right. However the end part of the news is more terrifying as they say unhealthy sleeping habit my disrupt biological clock. I used sleep at mid night and wake up at 10 am, does that mean the risk of skin cancer or early aging is higher for me!

Cody, I guess so. Many thought that the amount of sleeping is important not the timing. But if we try to alter the natural habit of sleeping it causes disturbance to our biological clock.
