Applying Hormone Treatment For Prostate Cancer – Pros And Cons

Prostate cancer is a condition which treatment is presented under various types, all of them depending on several factors. One factor is definitely represented by the stages within which the condition is detected in its manifestation.

One thing that patients should know when confronted with the choice of treatment is that each treatment has its own pros and cons, and the same can be said on hormone treatment applied for prostate cancer. There is a large number of patients who resort to hormone treatment which will eventually work great for them. This is what has determined many doctors to resort to this method in treating this type of cancer.

One should know that in male human testosterone has been found in the testes as the main hormone which with some individuals comes in an overproduction of these cells. When this phenomenon occurs, then cancer condition can develop. This is why some of the treatments will be approached on the hormonal perspective. But with cases of a more advanced stage of prostate cancer, this treatment can not help at all, as there will be the need for a more aggressive form of treating this evolved condition.

But for those stages when hormone treatment works one should know that this one functions on the premises of blocking the testosterone not allowing the cells grow and form cancerous cells. For this purpose medications will be prescribed for taking them 3 times per day and in some cases adding injections every three months.

When those stages of prostate cancer will allow hormone treatment to be applied, patients should be aware of the pros and cons of this method which are as follows:

PROS

It is very gentle on the body especially when recommended on men who are in the early stage of disease.

It functions very well inside the body, men feeling very comfortable with being administered this type of treatment.

CONS

Once the hormone treatment gives signs of not working, then it won’t work at all for the future either. Therefore the next step would be to move to another type of treatment. One option that doctors recommend is to have the testes removed and in this way the possibility of the cancerous cell to expand is eliminated. This goes many times for the late stage of this disease.

Hormone treatment presents side effects. It decreases sex drive, brings liver damage, nausea, breast enhancement, weight gain, fatigue, reducing as well the bone and muscle mass.

Through a typical treatment of this sort, it is not that cancerous cells are killed, but rather diminished in size and amount. This is definitely not a recommendation of treatment for the later stage of prostate cancer.

When being diagnosed with this type of cancer it will eventually be up to you and your doctor to decide what is there the best to opt for while reaching for the right treatment.

This treatment is only suitable for the males who are in the first stage of the cancer. One of my relatives was treated. He felt quite comfortable as this treatment functions well inside the body. Unfortunately this treatment could not be used for by the men at the advanced stage of prostate cancer.
