Is There A Prostate Cancer Diet?

Prostate cancer affects the prostate gland cells. Prostate cancer tumors can block the flow of urine and, if untreated, can spread to other parts of the body. In men, prostate cancer cells grow slowly and do not cause problems until they extend beyond the prostate. In some men, prostate cancer grows more quickly. It is important to diagnose prostate tumors in earlier stages to be evaluated tumor aggressiveness and to be treated before the disease spreads.

Some signs indicate a prostate condition. If any of them, go to a medical examination: difficulty or pain on urination, frequent urination, especially at night, feeling of impending urination, which can not be delayed, blood in urine or semen, impotence.

Doctors recommend that all men over 50 years to submit an annual medical checkup.

What foods should be limited?

Carbohydrates. A diet high in refined carbohydrates such as rice or white bread was associated with a development of prostate tumors. Researchers at a health center in Toronto have investigated whether high insulin levels due to excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates may stimulate faster development of prostate cancer cells in mice. Results showed that mice that had a diet with high carbohydrate content have gained weight, had high levels of insulin and a more accelerated development of cancerous tumors compared with mice that had a low carbohydrate diet.

Alcohol must be consumed in moderation. “Moderate” means no more than two drinks a day for men.

Folic acid. Men who take folic acid supplements daily double their risk of prostate cancer, according to a study by U.S. researchers at the University of Southern California. After reanalyzing the results of a study conducted between 1993 and 2006, researchers concluded that the estimated risk of prostate cancer is 9.7% in men who took folic acid and only 3.3% of those taking placebo . Folate is a B vitamin and is found in many vegetables, fruits and grains.
